UC Frats are Out of Control & Being Sued by Neighbors
In January, 2010, Paul Ghysels, a neighbor in the south of campus area of Berkeley, filed a class action lawsuit against all the fraternities in Berkeley. His complaint states that frats are businesses. They solicit membership from the public. They collect dues. They rent out rooms. They charge for parking cars. And yet, they feel that they are beyond the law. Everyother business needs an alcohol license to do what frats do, which is to sell and distribute liquor. But Frats think they are above the law. UC frats promote alcohol abuse and binge drinking. "Fraternity and sorority residence or membership was found to be the strongest predictor for high-risk drinking behavior. " Nat'l Inst. on Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism.
